Hedgelaying and coppicing course dates

Deadwood offers an array of courses in traditional countryside management, empowering
others to enhance the ecological value of their woodlands and hedgerows.
We base our courses during the autumn and winter months in North Nottinghamshire, but also offer bespoke across the country, according to the client’s needs.

An Introduction to Hedgelaying

A course that covers all the essentials needed to begin laying hedges (midlands style). From clearing out and plashing, to building, staking and binding, Russell will guide you through all that is needed to lay hedges, including tool selection, sharpening and hedgerow safety.

This is a 2-day course costing £220 per person.

Idle Valley Nature Centre, Retford.

Dates:

  • Saturday 6th December - Sunday 7th December 2025. 09:00-15:00.
  • Saturday 10th January - Sunday 11th January 2026. 09:00-15:00.

Bespoke courses:
We can offer an Introduction to Hedgelaying course anywhere in the country for those looking to train themselves, or a group of up to 8 people on their own land. Prices start from £2,500, please get in touch to discuss.

NHLS LANTRA Bronze Assessment:
Our Introduction to Hedgelaying course trains individuals to a National Hedgelaying Society (NHLS) LANTRA Bronze standard criteria. For those who wish to undertake a Bronze level assessment, this is organised through an independent NHLS assessor. The cost of this is £150, plus a £20 fee for non NHLS members, and assistance can be offered in organising this assessment. It is also recommended that, prior to assessment, novice hedgelayers hone the skills learnt in this course by laying 100m of hedgerow independently.
